Whether you've been drawing for years, or never even picked up a pencil, this observational drawing class will be a warm invitation to engage creatively with your world. Without pressure to make a masterpiece, just encouragement and guidance to enjoy the process, we’ll explore some fun exercises to quickly translate the world around you into art using the accessible and easy technique of contour-line drawing.

Description of Workshop:

Sarah will teach us how to create evocative and storied images using the simple tools of just a pen and paper. Focusing on drawing as a form of storytelling, you’ll learn how to see the infinite stories that surround you and how to quickly and easily translate them into expressive illustrations drawn in-the-moment.  We’ll also explore how this super accessible creative practice can have profound effects on our experience of the world, using our sketchbooks as a reminder to look for the extraordinary in the everyday as you turn the people, places and things you see "on the way" (or just sitting at home)  into works of art.

Please bring the following to class:

A pen or pencil

A few sheets of paper

A small, meaningful object. It could be anything from a necklace, to a plant, to a teacup -- just something that you have a special connection to. We'll be using this as part of our drawing inspiration.

About the Book

Drawn On The Way is a friendly invitation to engage creatively with your world while you’re on the way. Using simple, portable tools like a pen, sketchbook and markers to draw the people, places and things that make up our lives. The book is full of tips and techniques that developed over 10 years of drawing in-the-moment to help you quickly capture what you see, overcome the inner critic, and take time to make art without taking time out of your day. It’s about drawing, but it’s really about seeing. It’s about how to find — and draw — the extraordinary in the everyday.”

About the Author

A former professional opera singer, Sarah Nisbett learned how to draw by sketching strangers during her daily commute on the New York City Subway. A totally self-taught artist, she has drawn over 5,000 strangers and turned her hobby of drawing “on the way” into a successful illustration career, Instagram account, blog and book. Her Drawn On The Way drawing project is dedicated to helping people find the extraordinary in the everyday and to see themselves and those around them as works of art.
