A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
This is one of my favorite books from 2011 - now coming out in paperback. Set amid the "dreaming spires" of Oxford University, a graduate student, who is beginning to realize that she can no longer deny her magical powers as a witch, forms anunlikely alliance with a Professor (also a deliciously intellectual vampire) to unlock the spell that guards an ancient volume which contains long sought after information about the origins of magic. Waiting on the sidelines are thedaemons - the terrorists of the magical world, hoping to be able to get hold of the book by whatever means necessary. This is the first of a trilogy, written by an Elizabethan scholar, and anyone who enjoyed Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian" should pick this one up. Schedule some uninterrupted time to read it - you won't want to be disturbed once you start, and then you will wait impatiently for the second book, due later this Spring.
