Our Recomendation

The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson

This unique novel challenges the reader on multiple levels. Set in North Korea it is a story of a brutal political regime, a morality play, a study of individual motivation and responsibility and, in some respects, even a modern fairy tale. Broad in scope, rich in detail, it has a depth rarely attained in modern fiction. - Bill

Adam Johnson will be at Nicola's Books for a discussion and signing of The Orphan Master's Son on Tuesday, January 24th at 7pm

Nicola's Recommendation

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

This is one of my favorite books from 2011 - now coming out in paperback. Set amid the "dreaming spires" of Oxford University, a graduate student, who is beginning to realize that she can no longer deny her magical powers as a witch, forms an unlikely alliance with a Professor (also a deliciously intellectual vampire) to unlock the spell that guards an ancient volume which contains long sought after information about the origins of magic.   Waiting on the sidelines are the daemons - the terrorists of the magical world, hoping to be able to get hold of the book by whatever means necessary.   This is the first of a trilogy, written by an Elizabethan scholar, and anyone who enjoyed Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian" should pick this one up. Schedule some uninterrupted time to read it - you won't want to be disturbed once you start, and then you will wait impatiently for the second book, due later this Spring.
