Note From Nicola
I have been quietly looking for a new owner for some time, knowing that it would be prudent to have long term plans to keep the store in good hands. I have family in England
and during the past 16 months or so, I have been away from the store for several extended periods of time, some planned, others hastily arranged. As I look to the future, it is likely that unplanned trips to England are likely to re-occur. In the meantime I will remain in place, running the store, until I have found the route that will take
Nicola’s Books into its next phase. I hope that I will have a clearer view of the future by May. My goal is to keep the store vibrant and viable for the future. The store IS
NOT closing, the store IS NOT moving, I am not moving out of
Michigan and gift certificates are still all valid.
JUNE 30, 2014 - UPDATE
I am happy to be able
to say officially that I have found new owners for the store. Bill and Cecile Fehsenfeld, owners of Schuler
Books are adding Nicola’s books to their family of bookstores. They currently have stores in Grand Rapids,
Lansing and Okemos, and they opened their first store in 1982, so they are long term book people. They are familiar
with Ann Arbor, having met here, and their first child was born here. They are excited to be reconnecting to Ann
Arbor. Nicola’s Books and the Schuler organization have worked together on various topics over many years, but I had
not met Bill & Cecile until this February. We have had many meetings, phone conversations and emails since then,
and I have been delighted to discover how similar we are in our respective images of what makes for a good independent bookstore. Schuler’s has developed an impressive behind
the scenes management system, which will complement the in store bookselling skills of Nicola’s staff.
Do not expect to see major changes to the character of Nicola’s Books. The familiar faces of most of the staff will remain, and I will be in the store at least until the end of the year, helping with the transition. Bill Cusumano,
our book buyer for adult books moved to Mississippi in mid-June, having been defeated by the Michigan winter! He had been hoping to be able to move south for a while, so this has dovetailed serendipitously with the sale to Schuler’s.
The links and partnerships that Nicola’s books has developed with the Michigan Theater, area schools, libraries, Universities and local non-profit organizations will remain. Our author events and other in-store
activities such as book clubs will continue.
We will be happy to answer any questions, and we expect the change in ownership to happen in mid-August. You may see some new faces in the store between now and then, as we receive training from Schuler’s and as they become
familiar with how things work at Nicola’s. I am confident that this change give Nicola’s Books a renewed vitality,
which I expect will carry forward for many years to come.
